Aquamarine has been used by the ancient Romans as protection against the perils of the sea. According to legend, the Roman god of the sea, Poseidon, sent a jewel-encrusted chariot pulled by seahorses over the cresting ocean waves with an Aquamarine gemstone in tow every full moon. This became known as... the "Aqua Maris" - the sea-water gemstone. The ancient Greeks believed it to be the treasure of mermaids, and many kept a piece of Aquamarine with them while traveling in boats so they could summon a mermaid if they were ever in need.
